Eric Smyth, PhD

About

I am currently a project manager with Scout Clean Energy in Boulder, CO. Scout develops utility-scale wind and solar energy projects across the U.S.

I completed my PhD in Geology (Hydrology) in May 2022 at the University of Colorado at Boulder - working with Dr. Eric Small and Dr. Mark Raleigh.

Hydrology Research

Through my doctoral research, I led the development of several research studies with the goal of improving the real-time data available to water managers in the Western U.S.

Specifically, my research focused on improving model estimates of snow density and snow water equivalent through data assimilation of remotely-sensed snowpack characteristics – such as snow depth and fractional snow-covered area. I developed a spatially distributed, high-resolution model for snow forecasting and analysis at the basin/watershed scale – currently being scaled up to the state of CO.

Investment Banking

Before my time as a PhD student, I worked as an investment banking analyst in the Oil & Gas group at J.P. Morgan, in New York City.

In that role, I was the lead analyst advising PDC Energy on their $1.5bn acquisition of oilfield assets in the Permian Basin (2016) – modeling the transaction impact on the company’s cash flow to shareholders. I was also the M&A analyst advising Cheniere on its $1.0bn offer to buy the publicly held shares of Cheniere Energy Partners Holdings - valuing both companies, and preparing an advocacy deck for the Conflicts Committee.
